Heart-Brain Interactions
The Coherent Heart is IHM's most comprehensive scientific monograph to date. It provides an in-depth understanding of the role of the heart role in the emergence of systemwide coherence and new research findings on how heart-brain interactions affect various aspects of cognitive performance. The Coherent Heart explores communication within and among the body's systems through the generation and transmission of rhythms and patterns in the nervous and hormonal systems. Using the pattern of the heart's rhythmic activity as the primary physiological marker, six different modes of psychophysiological function are identified, distinguished by their physiological, mental, and emotional correlates. Building on these empirical findings, IHM's research on the psychophysiology of emotions is synthesized for the first time in a typology—a conceptual "map"—of psychophysiological interaction, which is presented graphically. Explored in depth are the characteristics and benefits of the psychophysiological coherence mode, associated with sustained positive emotions and a global shift to increased synchronization and harmony in psychophysiological processes.
Topics covered include how coherence aids in pain reduction, the interactions between heart rhythms and respiration, and how heart coherence affects emotional experience and hormones such as cortisol and oxytocin. Of particular interest is the thorough discussion of how coherence improves cognitive performance, which highlights how the heart and brain interact to affect cognitive processes. This section provides a review of past research on heart-brain interactions, presents new research data on heart coherence, and introduces a new hypothesis regarding the influence of "macro-scale" patterns of heart activity on cognition.
Power of the Heart’s Electromagnetic Field
The heart, like the brain, generates a powerful electromagnetic field, McCraty explains in The Energetic Heart. "The heart generates the largest electromagnetic field in the body. The electrical field as measured in an electrocardiogram (ECG) is about 60 times greater in amplitude than the brain waves recorded in an electroencephalogram (EEG)."
HeartMath studies show this powerful electromagnetic field can be detected and measured several feet away from a person’s body and between two individuals in close proximity.
In the HeartMath study, The Electricity of Touch: Detection and Measurement of Cardiac Energy Exchange Between People, researchers set out to determine whether the heart’s electromagnetic field, as measured by an electrocardiogram (ECG), in one individual could be detected and measured in another person when the pair either were seated within about three feet of each other or held hands. The results of The Electricity of Touch experiment were positive: The data showed "when people touch or are in proximity, a transference of the electromagnetic energy produced by the heart occurs," the study’s authors wrote.
They observed that although additional research should be conducted, there were potential important implications raised by this research when viewed in conjunction with the success of numerous healing modalities.
Practices such as therapeutic touch, holoenergetic healing, healing touch, chi gong and reiki among others "are based upon the assumption that an exchange of energy occurs to facilitate healing," according to the findings. "While there exists scientific evidence to substantiate the physiological and psychological effects of many of these treatments, science has as yet not been able to describe a mechanism by which this putative energy exchange between individuals takes place. This study, together with the work of (other research) … represents one of the first successful attempts to directly measure an exchange of energy between people."
The Heart and Emotions
The heart’s electromagnetic field contains certain information or coding, which researchers are trying to understand, that is transmitted throughout and outside of the body. One of the most significant findings of IHM’s research related to this field is that intentionally generated positive emotions can change this information/coding.
That discovery raises the question whether the cardioelectromagnetic field information transmitted from an individual who is angry, fearful, depressed or experiencing some other negative emotion, takes on beneficial properties when it is influenced by positive emotions. Also, is the care, compassion, love or other positive emotion not only transmitted throughout an individual’s body as the cardioelectromagnetic field radiates through it, but transferred externally as well to people in close proximity or even, perhaps, over long distances?
Although HeartMath is continuing to study the effects of human electromagnetic fields over large distances, researchers say the answer to the first question, whether self-regulated positive emotions can be beneficial to the individual, is yes.
"Through the use of tools and technologies that foster positive emotions and psychophysiological coherence, individuals can effectively initiate a repatterning process, whereby habitual emotional patterns underlying stress are replaced with new, healthier patterns that establish increased emotional stability, mental acuity, and physiological efficiency as a new familiar baseline or norm," that was according to the paper Emotional Stress, Positive Emotions, and Psychophysiological Coherence. The paper, written by IHM researchers McCraty and DanaTomasino comprised a chapter in the 2006 book, Stress in Health and Disease, published by Wiley-VCH.
Although additional research will be required to determine the nature and function of this energy/information the heart sends out, IHM’s researchers have conducted numerous studies on how positive emotions can affect us. Participants in several studies, and indeed thousands of people worldwide who are using the HeartMath System of tools and technology, can attest to a broad range of benefits resulting from intentionally experiencing certain emotions, which HeartMath calls emotion self-regulation.
Assessing the Energetic Heart – Near and Far

In one of HeartMath’s most recent studies, researchers examined whether there is an energy exchange, in this case heart-braininteractions, in one of the most intimate of human relationships. The Proof of Concept Study: Heart-Brain Synchronization between Mother and Baby "explored the potential to measure energetic heart-brain interactions that may be occurring between a mother and her infant."

The top wave (blue) in the graph is the mother’s signal averaged electroencephalograph (EEG), or brainwave signal. The bottom wave is her infant’s signal averaged electrocardiogram (ECG). Signal averaging is a technique for detecting synchronization between two signals. In this example, the mother’s brainwave is clearly synchronized to her baby’s heartbeat.
Researchers were able to show that the mother’s brainwaves synchronized to that of her baby’s heartbeat. In this experiment, the baby was laying in the mother’s lap with a blanket placed in between mother and baby. In the summary of their findings, the study’s authors wrote, "This preliminary data elucidates the intriguing finding that the electromagnetic signals generated by the heart have the capacity to affect others around us. … It appears that when the mother placed her attention on the baby that she became more sensitive to the subtle electromagnetic signals generated by the infant’s heart. … These findings have intriguing implications, suggesting that a mother in a psychophysiologically coherent state became more sensitive to the subtle electromagnetic information encoded in the electromagnetic signals of her infant."

One of the questions being explored by the science-based Global Coherence Initiative, launched in 2008 by the Institute of HeartMath, is whether human electromagnetic fields can be influenced over much greater distances. The GCI, which has an international membership of about 25,000, is utilizing advanced magnetometer sensing technology to observe changes in the earth’s magnetic field by, among other possible effects, mass human emotions.The GCI’s greater purpose is "to unite millions of people worldwide in heart-focused care and intention, to help shift global consciousness from instability and discord to balance, cooperation and enduring peace," and the Institute of HeartMath believes that purpose will be served as scientists gain greater insight into the energetic heart.

Each Individual Impacts the Field Environment

Each individual’s thoughts, attitudes and emotions emit energetic fields. These individual field environments not only affect you, your health and perspective on life, they also can influence your relationships and experiences in your social field environments as you interact with people, or even if you are merely in the same room with other people. Can we change our individual, social, and even planetary environments and create the one in which we choose to live? We can.
Attitudes of coherent genuine love, appreciation, care and compassion change a field environment – both locally – say in a meeting you are in – and throughout the world. Coherence is a highly efficient state in which all of the body’s systems work together in harmony. Increasing personal coherence creates an alignment of mind, body, emotions and spirit through the power of the heart. Heart coherence serves as a facilitator, adding strength and effectiveness to your care, compassion, intentions and actions to help the world.
The electromagnetic field generated by the heart is the most powerful rhythmic energy field produced by the body. Studies conducted in IHM’s laboratory have shown that the heart’s electromagnetic field can be detected by other individuals and can produce measurable effects in a person 5 feet away. Our data show that the heart’s electromagnetic field becomes more organized during positive emotional – heart-coherent – states.

Individual Field Environment
Sometimes we wake up in the morning and our energy field is sunny-side-up and bubbly. Then our pitch drops after a few bumpy interactions such as I spilled my coffee; I can’t find my keys; I’m late for work; and so on. Such frustrations often magnetize more negative thoughts, insecurity and anxiety, leaving you more vulnerable to plate overload, impossible time crunches and personal energy drain. You can reset the pitch of your individual field environment by doing the following:
Stop, relax a few minutes, while imagining yourself breathing the attitude of neutral in through your heart or chest area. This quiets the energy of frustration and anxiety. Then you can re-center yourself in the heart and replace the negative field environment with a positive attitude and outlook. Then tell yourself, "You’re back in charge now." It’s important to learn to shift your pitch in the field environment when you find yourself in the "drain mode."

Social Field Environment
A family dinner, your next business meeting and social gatherings are examples of social field environments. When you hear someone say, "You could cut the tension in the room with a knife," in essence this is referring to a turbulent field environment. Lively discussions in business meetings that spiral down into arguments can leave people in the room feeling, "Why even be in here? What a waste of my precious time," etc. In contrast, you’ve also probably been in places with people communicating from their heart space and heard comments that the energy in the room (field environment) was upbeat, heart-based and inspired creative interaction and solutions. The people felt refreshed and energized by the positive field-environment.
Most people have experienced the situations above. The collective energy in a room makes up the field-environment, which vibrates at a certain pitch. The overall room pitch or vibration, is based on the collective pitch of the individuals in the room. Often when a few individuals take the initiative, they can change the collective room vibration by increasing their own pitch. This can be done by radiating the attitude of peace and flow into the field environment while doing deep heart listening, with the intent remaining neutral without judgment. Then sharing from the heart becomes easier and more objective without the negative energy that brings down the collective field environment. Though we can’t help it at times, judgments and criticisms are in most cases, responsible for bringing down the pitch in communication field-environments (meetings or personal communications).
With practice we can learn to reset our personal pitch when communicating with others by returning to deep heart listening from a neutral space without the judgments. As individuals practice maintaining their pitch, then the stronger the collective positive field environment becomes. This makes it easier for all to experience a higher ratio of coherent interaction and save a great deal of energy.

Planetary Field Environment
The planetary field environment encompasses Earth and its people. Much of it is made up of the collective consciousness of the inhabitants. Radiating love into the planetary field environment increases the positive energy, making it easier for the planet and its inhabitants to shift and transmute the accumulated negative energy. Even sending two minutes of loving care a day to mother earth can make a big difference. More and more people are feeling the intuitive nudge to participate in these types of exercises because of a growing sense of responsibility as caretakers. It’s a responsibility like – taking out the trash while dwelling in a family home.
It also helps to take some time to envision the planet the way you want it to be, because thoughts and imagination precede the creation and manifestation of what we are trying to obtain. (Be it a house, car, relationship, vocation, etc.) Besides caring more for earth, another major facet of the planetary shift is realizing the need to be more responsible for our own energy, thoughts, feelings and actions. This especially will upgrade the personal and global field environment.
Remember, we are always creating an effective or ineffective field environment with whatever thoughts, feelings and attitudes we are experiencing or putting out. We can consciously effect positive change in our personal and social field environments. Then the positive field environment will multiply our potential to experience a more balanced and joyful life. Head-Heart InteractionsTraditionally, the study of communication pathways between the "head" and heart has been approached from a rather one-sided perspective, with scientists focusing primarily on the heart’s responses to the brain’s commands. However, we have now learned that communication between the heart and brain is actually a dynamic, ongoing, two-way dialogue, with each organ continuously influencing the other’s function. Research has shown that the heart communicates to the brain in four major ways: neurologically (through the transmission of nerve impulses), biochemically (via hormones and neurotransmitters), biophysically (through pressure waves) and energetically (through electromagnetic field interactions). Communication along all these conduits significantly affects the brain’s activity. Moreover, our research shows that messages the heart sends the brain can also affect performance. The studies described in this section probe several of these communication pathways, looking specifically at how the brain responds to patterns generated by the heart during positive emotional states. The first two studies focus primarily on neurological interactions, demonstrating that the afferent signals the heart sends the brain during positive emotions can alter brain activity in several ways. In the first study, we find that cardiac coherence can drive entrainment between very low frequency brainwaves and heart rhythms, thus further expanding our understanding of the physiological entrainment mode described in the previous section. In the second study, we learn that coherent heart rhythms also lead to increased heart-brain synchronization. The implications of these findings are explored in the third study, which shows that in states of high heart rhythm coherence, individuals demonstrate significant improvements in cognitive performance. Taken together, these results suggest that cardioelectromagnetic communication may be a little-known source of information exchange between people, and that this exchange is influenced by our emotions. As compared to the control group, subjects using the Cut-Thru technique demonstrated a significant decrease in reaction times in the discrimination task following the application of the technique, indicating improved cognitive performance (Figure 17). In addition, a significant relationship was found between the degree of heart rhythm coherence and reaction times. This study represents one of the first successful attempts to directly measure an energy exchange between people, and provides a solid, testable theory to explain the observed effects of many healing modalities that are based upon the assumption that an energy exchange takes place. Nonlinear stochastic resonance is a mechanism by which weak, coherent electromagnetic fields, such as those generated by the heart of an individual in a caring state, may be detected and amplified by biological tissue, and potentially produce measurable effects in living systems. Evidence that the cardiac field changes as different emotions are experienced, combined with this study’s finding that this field is registered physiologically by those around us, provides the foundation of one possible mechanism to describe the impact of our emotions on others at a basic physiological level. One implication is that the effects of therapeutic techniques involving contact or proximity between practitioner and patient could be amplified by practitioners consciously adopting a sincere, caring attitude, and thus increasing coherence in their cardiac field.
